Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as environmental contaminants of growing concern because of their potential impacts on livestock health, food safety, and public health. This review aims to synthesize current evidence regarding MP contamination in food-producing animals, their exposure pathways, toxicological effects on animal health, implications for food safety and human health, and the importance of the One Health approach in mitigating associated risks. Current evidence indicates that livestock are primarily exposed to MPs through contaminated feed, drinking water, and farming environments. Following exposure, MPs may induce oxidative stress, inflammatory responses, gut microbiota dysbiosis, metabolic disturbances, and structural and functional alterations in organs such as the liver and pancreas. These findings further highlight the need for greater attention to MP exposure in food-producing animals and its potential implications for animal health and food safety. The detection of MPs in meat, milk, dairy products, and eggs further suggests their potential transfer into the human food chain and raises concerns regarding food safety. Despite increasing evidence, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding accumulation mechanisms, long-term health effects, analytical standardization, and risk assessment. Therefore, integrated monitoring, standardized analytical methods, and One Health-based mitigation strategies are essential to reduce MP contamination throughout the food production chain.
